Portfolio 2019

Technical progression and custom equipment

In 2019 my technical approach to light-painting evolved significantly. I began using a self-made kit of light tubes constructed from thick transparent acrylic material. These tubes were heavy but I sanded them entirely by hand to achieve a better light diffusion. To expand the color palette I applied various colored gels and films inside the tubes. The real breakthrough of this year was the integration of holographic filters inside the acrylic which dynamically altered the color temperature depending on the incidence angle of the light.

During this period I relied heavily on my Sony a7 III paired with a Samyang 16mm f/2.8 and a Sony 24-70mm GM f/2.8.

We explored numerous locations across Salento working with many different models to test these new tools. One of the most challenging environments was the Grotte delle Cipolliane located in the deepest south near Santa Maria di Leuca. It was a remarkably difficult location to reach especially during a very hot summer night. The model Cristina demonstrated immense physical endurance resisting the fatigue and intense heat required to complete that specific long-exposure session.
