Creative celebrity portrait photography: a long-exposure week in Italy

In my 20 years of working across web design, video and professional photography, I've learned that the most creatively fulfilling projects often start with unpredictability. It was an ordinary day until I received a direct message on Instagram offering to collaborate on a unique visual project. The sender was Alexis Fawx, a highly renowned entertainer based in Los Angeles. She appreciated my light-painting artwork and wanted to fly out to Salento, Italy, so we could create something different.

When working on a creative celebrity portrait photography project, the pressure is on not just to deliver sharp images, but to execute complex long-exposure techniques safely while managing talent in unpredictable outdoor locations. .*

Managing Jet Lag and Coastal Exposures

"A great portrait is not just about the lighting; it's about making the subject comfortable enough to forget the camera exists." During her stay in Lecce, I wanted to welcome my guest into the environment of sunsets atop cliffs and star-filled skies. We started with a light painting session at Porto Cesareo. Despite her jet lag after flying such a long distance, her professionalism as a model shone through instantly. On day two, we were lucky enough to get perfect summer weather as we visited Baia Dei Turchi (Otranto).

Safe Steel Wool Portraits

creative model portrait Working with my invaluable assistant Roberta, we persevered from dusk 'til late on a humid and chilly night to create images using steel wool and light tubes. Alexis embodied these shots in her custom-made clothing, maintaining perfectly still poses during the multi-second exposures.

(Example: When shooting with steel wool near a model, always ensure the spark trajectory is angled backwards, away from the subject, and have a fire blanket or extinguisher within arm's reach).

Light-painting has quickly become one of the most popular forms of artistic expression in modern portraiture. Want to learn how to make yourself invisible in a photo while lighting a model without having to use Photoshop? Check out my comprehensive guide on how to hide yourself in a photo shoot.

Wind, caves and environmental challenges

Our third day was spent amongst the Sant'Andrea stacks where we battled against windy conditions as distant thunderstorms loomed ominously overhead. In this location, the elemental conditions added drama to the shots as we embraced fire elements within unique karst rock caves.

On my penultimate day of shooting, I chose Torre Uluzzo, sitting atop a cliff at Porto Selvaggio. The rock wall offered protection from the strong north winds. My model wore an elegant black dress while I experimented with various lighting tools (an orange tube first, followed by shorter tubes). The combination of sunset colors and twinkling stars really completed this scene.
